FreePoems & Paintings with Desirée Alvarez: A Personal Ecopoetics Painter and poet Desirée Alvarez will read from her recent book of poems Raft of Flame as well as her first book, Devil’s Paintbrush. A fourth generation Bridgewater resident, she will give a slide talk about how growing up with Bridgewater’s nature and history has influenced her work as a writer and visual artist. Bio Desirée Alvarez is a painter and poet exploring the boundaries of how we visually experience words and language. Her second book, Raft of Flame, won the Lake Merritt Poetry Contest and was published by Omnidawn in 2020. Her first book, Devil’s Paintbrush, won the 2015 May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Award. Her poetry is anthologized in What Nature (MIT Press, 2018) and is featured in Other Musics: New Latina Poetry (University of Oklahoma Press, 2019). She has published poems in Boston Review, Fence, Poetry, Massachusetts Review and The Iowa Review and received the Glenna Luschei Prairie Schooner Award, three New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships and the Willard L. Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for her visual art. She exhibits widely nationally and internationally and teaches at The Juilliard School and City Tech, CUNY. Currently, her visual art can be seen at Brooklyn Botanic Garden Conservatory Gallery’s Plant Cure Exhibition through March 27, 2022 and in Amsterdam at Weatherproof! in NDSM Fuse Wunderkammer, Scheepsbouwloods.
