Canceled Building The Lincoln Memorial: A Virtual Program with John Cilio
May 14, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Registration required. Participants will receive a link to the live presentation.
During the 50-minute presentation on building the Lincoln Memorial, we will discover how a poor rural farmer from Kentucky became a successful lawyer, state and Federal legislator becoming the 16th President of the United States. We’ll focus on the 50-year effort to design and construct the massive Memorial dedicated to his contributions to the country. The memorial measures nearly 190 feet by 119 feet and is 99 feet tall. We’ll discuss the symbolism incorporated into the major interior and exterior elements of the memorial including the 60-by-12-foot murals painted in the wings. Robert Todd Lincoln, his son, was 78 years old when he attended the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial on May 30, 1922. The memorial has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since October 15, 1966 and is visited by 8 million visitors yearly.
