Passwords and Security Basics
Our near-universal adoption of personal technology has left many users with great unease about security threats – or perceived threats. This entry-level, non-technical lecture will discuss everyday issues, and show you common-sense measures everyone can take in their online world. We will cover: • Passwords, and why you should use a password manager • Phishing emails and texts, and how to avoid those traps • Malware – and the fake malware threats (“scareware”) you’re more likely to see • Data backups • Safer web surfing, and other basic practices • Scams in the App Store (!) • And – who you should perhaps really be scared of… Disclosure: Because the presenter refuses to use a PC or Android phone (There’s your first tip about security…), some of the specific settings and techniques shown will relate solely to Apple Mac computers and iPhones; however, the basic concepts and suggestions should be helpful to all users. Presenter Michael Jay is a certified Apple Teacher, and the owner of Personal Tech Support. He worked for many years in Hollywood as a tech consultant and editor. In addition to tutoring and lecturing at other regional libraries and schools, Michael has taught technology-related courses at several colleges, including NYU.
