SUMMARY:The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England - A Shepaug Libraries Program
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Gunn Memorial Library and Historical Museum\nJoin the Gunn Historical Museum and guest lecturer Ken Turino for a free virtual presentation on Zoom about the history of Christmas. This well-illustrated lecture traces the development of the celebration of Christmas from the time it was outlawed in 17th Century New England through the beginning of the 21st Century when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place. For many\, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year.  But many of the customs which we take for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations are actually a product of more recent history. The presentation will look at how Christmas was transformed from a rowdy celebration to a family-centered event. Some Washington\, Connecticut Christmas traditions and stories will also be highlighted in this presentation. \nRegistration is required. Click here to register and receive the Zoom link. \nCONTACT:  Stephen Bartkus  8608687756  curator@gunnhistoricalmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Politics of Sports - A Shepaug Library Program
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by The Gunn Memorial Library\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc globally in the sports industry. COVID-19 caused sports league seasons to be suspended and some sports organizations canceled 2020 events including the Olympics\, the French Open\, Wimbledon and minor league sports. No one knows where the sports world will end up once COVID-19 passes but three key trends lend insight as to how the sports industry will change. Evan Weiner is an award-winning journalist and recognized global expert of the “Politics of Sports Business.” He has a daily video podcast with the same title. He has been a radio commentator\, TV pundit on MSNBC\, NewsMax and ABC in the UK and United States. \nRegister on Gunn Memorial’s website  https://www.gunnlibrary.org/programregistration/ to get your Zoom link to participate.

SUMMARY:Slavery In Litchfield County
DESCRIPTION:Slavery in Litchfield County\nA lecture by Peter Vermilyea \nNovember 19th at 6:00PM\nThe pastoral hills of Litchfield County are inconsistent with the institution of slavery\, a notion that is heightened by the fact that the county was the birthplace of prominent abolitionists John Brown and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Yet slavery existed in Litchfield County for over 100 years and\, in some ways\, left an indelible mark on the region’s history. By looking at the experiences of a few individuals\, this lecture will examine the origin and nature of slavery in Litchfield County and the county’s complicated history with abolitionism. \nRegistration required.  To register\, click here!
