SUMMARY:CANCELED Memories @ the MATT: "Poskas: Father and Son"
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Connecticut Community Foundation\, Part of our Brain Health Series \nJoin the Mattatuck Museum for a virtual tour and discussion of their exciting new exhibition: “Poskas: Father and Son”\, which brings together the artwork of Waterbury natives Peter Poskas II and his son Peter Poskas III.  Dedicated to realist still lifes before a life-altering accident\, Poskas III has recently turned his attention to impressionistic views of the land\, animals\, and buildings surrounding his Washington\, CT farm. The tour guide will use the pieces of art in the exhibition to foster discussion with participants around certain themes and topics that may remind the audience of aspects or moments in their lives. \n A wide-ranging retrospective of late-career Poskas II\, and mid-career Poskas III\, this exhibition not only speaks to the body of work of both artists\, but also tracks how their relationship has changed\, grown\, and deepened over time through the lens of their artwork. The MATT’s memory care tours are designed to give time and space for the audience to share their own experiences and feelings about pieces. \nThis program is virtual and takes place over Zoom. Registration is required. RSVP below. A link to the Zoom room will be sent out to registrants prior to the program. Cut-off for registration is Wednesday\, Oct. 16th at noon. This program is dementia-friendly but open to all.  \nQuestions? Email Katie at ksteele@burnhamlibrary.org. \nAbout the Brain Health Series: This event is part of Burnham Library’s ongoing Brain Health Series\, which is dedicated to promoting mental wellness through engaging and educational activities. Sponsored by the Connecticut Community Foundation\, this series offers a range of programs designed to keep the mind sharp\, foster community connections\, and enhance interactions between individuals experiencing memory loss and their care partners. \n

SUMMARY:Author Lori Gottlieb: Maybe You Should Talk To Someone
DESCRIPTION:Maybe You Should Talk To Someone: Examining the Truths and Fictions We Tell Ourselves with Lori Gottlieb\nWednesday\, October 22 at 2:00 pm via digital live-stream \nREGISTER HERE \nEvery year\, nearly 30 million Americans sit on a therapist’s couch—and some of these patients are therapists. In her remarkable book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone\, Lori Gottlieb tells us that despite her license and rigorous training\, her most significant credential is that she’s a card-carrying member of the human race. “I know what it’s like to be a person\,” she writes\, as a crisis causes her world to come crashing down. \nWith startling wisdom and humor\, Gottlieb reveals our blind spots\, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire\, meaning and mortality\, guilt and redemption\, terror and courage\, hope and change. \nAbout the Author: Lori Gottlieb is a psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone\, which has sold over two million copies and is currently being adapted as a television series starring Kristen Bell. In addition to her clinical practice\, she co-hosts the popular “Dear Therapists” podcast produced by Katie Couric and writes The Atlantic’s “Dear Therapist” advice column. She is a sought-after expert in media such as The Today Show\, Good Morning America\, CBS This Morning\, CNN\, and NPR’s “Fresh Air” and her TED Talk was one of the Top 10 Most Watched of the Year. She is the creator of the Maybe You Should Talk To Someone Workbook: A Toolkit for Editing Your Story and Changing Your Life and the Maybe You Should Talk To Someone Journal: 52 Weekly Sessions to Transform Your Life. SUMMARY:A Navajo Investigator’s Search for the Unexplained: In Conversation with Stanley Milford\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:A Navajo Investigator’s Search for the Unexplained: In Conversation with Stangley Milford\, Jr.\nThursday\, November 7 at 7:00 pm via digital live stream \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin us in conversation with Navajo Ranger\, Stanley Milford\, Jr. as he chats about the chilling and clear-eyed memoir of his investigations into bizarre cases of the paranormal and the unexplained in Navajoland. \nIn The Paranormal Ranger\, Milford recounts the stories of these cases from the clinical and deductive perspective of a law enforcement officer. Milford’s Native American worldview and investigative training collide to provide an eerie account of what logic dictates should not be possible. Register now to expand your own worldview and be ready for a chill to run down your spine! \nAbout the Author: Stanley Milford\, Jr.\, graduated from the United States Indian Police Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia\, New Mexico\, and worked continuously as a sworn law enforcement officer for over twenty-three years. He served as the delegated Chief Navajo Ranger for over two years through March of 2019. While with the Navajo Rangers\, Stan oversaw a section called the Special Projects Unit (SPU)\, whose responsibilities included the investigation of cases that did not fit within everyday parameters of law enforcement or criminal investigation\, many of which involved reports of the paranormal or supernatural. After leaving the Navajo Rangers\, Stan served as the senior investigator for the Navajo Nation’s White Collar Crime Unit.

SUMMARY:Author Javier Zamora: On Childhood Migration from Central America
DESCRIPTION:On Childhood Migration from Central America–In Conversation with Javier Zamora\nThursday\, November 14 at 4:00 via digital live stream \nREGISTER HERE \nTune in for a special conversation with New York Times bestselling author Javier Zamora as he chats with us about his riveting tale of survival and perseverance as told in his award-winning memoir Solito. \nZamora’s adventure involves a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador through Guatemala and Mexico and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety\, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks. \nSolito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story\, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home. Register today to learn more about this gripping and moving story! \nAbout the Author: Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador in 1990. His father fled the country when he was one and his mother when he was about to turn five. Both parents’ migrations were caused by the U.S.-funded Salvadoran Civil War. When he was nine\, Javier migrated through Guatemala\, Mexico\, and the Sonoran Desert. His debut poetry collection\, Unaccompanied\, explores the impact of the war and immigration on his family. Zamora has been a Stegner Fellow at Stanford and a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard and holds fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
