SUMMARY:Bridgewater: A Century Ago
DESCRIPTION:THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY AT CAPACITY!\nSponsored by the Bridgewater Historical Society and Bridgewater Land Trust \nLook for a second presentation at the Hilltop Center coming in May! email julie@bridgewaterlandtrust.org \nA wine and cheese reception to follow. \nJoin us on a visual journey through Bridgewater: A Century Ago. It’s hard to imagine that just 100 years ago\, Bridgewater was a town of narrow dirt roads\, few automobiles\, and mail delivered by horse and wood-shod sled. Tobacco farming was at its peak\, dairy farms dotted the landscape\, and the mighty Housatonic River flowed through town. At the heart of the village\, a library built of Mine Hill granite rose as a community landmark\, followed a few years later by the Burnham School in 1929—both gifts of Clipper Ship Captain William D. Burnham. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Author & Playwright Tom Dulack
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Author & Playwright Tom Dulack\nRegistration required. RSVP below. \nJoin award-winning author and playwright Tom Dulack for an evening of conversation and readings from his memoir\, Miserere. Set against the backdrop of post–World War II Europe\, the memoir explores war\, memory\, and the complex influence of a priest who shaped Dulack’s intellectual and artistic development. Limited copies are available for loan at the library or for purchase from The Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington Depot and on Amazon. \nWhile reading the memoir in advance is not required\, it is encouraged to enhance discussion and understanding.  \nMiserere is a deeply reflective memoir that explores one of the most decisive intellectual and cultural influences of Dulack’s early development as a writer and playwright. Set in post–World War II Europe\, the book examines the devastating effects of war through the story of a soldier-priest\, while drawing parallels to writers who bore witness to wartime tragedy\, including Ernest Hemingway\, Thomas Mann\, Ezra Pound\, and T. S. Eliot. \nAbout the Author: Tom Dulack is a novelist and award-winning playwright known for his compelling storytelling across both fiction and theater. His novels include The Stigmata of Dr. Constantine\, In Love with Shakespeare\, and The Misanthropes. \nAs a playwright\, Dulack’s works have earned national and international acclaim. Incommunicado won the Kennedy Center Award for New American Plays\, while Friends Like These received the Kaufman and Hart Prize for New American Comedy. His play Breaking Legs enjoyed a long New York run\, an extensive national tour\, and has been performed worldwide in multiple languages\, remaining a staple of regional theater for more than 20 years. Other notable plays include Diminished Capacity and Solomon’s Child\, produced both on and off Broadway. \nIn addition to his work in theater\, Dulack has written libretti and directed two operas and served as writer and director for more than forty Young People’s Concerts for the New York Philharmonic from 2005 to 2016. His work has also been presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. \nDulack is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Connecticut\, where he taught drama\, Shakespeare\, and creative writing. Born and raised in the Midwest\, he now lives in rural Connecticut with his wife\, Belgian art historian Véronique Sintobin. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Julien Levy: Life\, Legacy\, and the Women Artists He Championed
DESCRIPTION:Julien Levy: Life\, Legacy\, and the Women Artists He Championed\nRegistration required. RSVP below. \nThe presentation will be led by Marie Difilippantonio\, co-author of the four-volume publication Julien Levy: The Man; His Gallery; His Legacy. The program will explore the life and influence of Julien Levy (1906–1981)\, the pioneering art dealer widely credited with introducing Surrealism to the United States through his influential New York gallery during the 1930s and 1940s. A resident of Bridgewater later in life\, Levy continued to promote Surrealist art\, becoming a significant figure in the history of the movement in his own right. \nWhile Levy is often remembered for exhibiting artists such as Salvador Dalí and Man Ray\, he was also notable for championing a number of women artists at a time when opportunities for them were limited. This program will highlight several of the women whose work Levy supported and examine their contributions to modern art. \nSpeaker Marie Difilippantonio brings a unique perspective to Levy’s story. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Mercer University and began working for Jean Farley Levy\, Julien Levy’s widow\, in 1985. After Jean Levy’s death in 2003\, Difilippantonio helped facilitate the auctions of the Levy art collection\, books\, and ephemera held at Tajan in Paris in 2004 and 2006. She also catalogued and prepared a finding aid for the Levy archival papers before they were donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2008. \n
