SUMMARY:Penguins\, Polar Bears\, Peaks and Parks: Bio-geographical Journeys to the Earth's Four(?) Poles
DESCRIPTION:Penguins\, Polar Bears\, Peaks and Parks: Bio-geographical Journeys to the Earth’s Four(?) Poles\n\nThursday\, January 16 • 6:00 – 7:00 pm \nIt has become fashionable in the last few years to scale the seven highest peaks on each continent or walk across a continent or visit every country in the world. In this vein\, our speaker\, Dr Richard Benfield\, took four journeys in 2023 to the four geographic poles: the North Pole\, the South Pole\, and the other two. Other two? Where are they? In this one-hour presentation\, we will focus on the four poles and the animals and people who live there: their landscapes\, livelihoods\, and flora and fauna. Our presentation will show that even you can go there (though one of the poles is somewhat challenging) and take you into geographical worlds where few venture … you will also learn for your next trivia contest where the other two poles are located on Earth! \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Dystopian Tropes from an Indigenous Perspective: In Conversation with Waubgeshig Rice
DESCRIPTION:Dystopian Tropes from an Indigenous Perspective: In Conversation with Waubgeshig Rice\nTuesday\, February 11 at 7:00 pm via digital live stream \nREGISTER HERE \nYou’re invited to a riveting conversation with bestselling author Waubgeshig Rice about his newest book\, Moon of the Turning Leaves\, the hotly anticipated sequel to the bestselling novel\, Moon of the Crusted Snow. \nIt’s been over a decade since a mysterious cataclysm caused a permanent blackout that toppled infrastructure and thrust the world into anarchy. Evan Whitesky led his community in remote northern Ontario off the rez and into the bush\, where they’ve been living off the land\, rekindling their Anishinaabe traditions in total isolation from the outside world. \nAs new generations are born and others come of age in the world after everything\, Evan’s people are in some ways stronger than ever. However\, resources in and around their new settlement are beginning to dry up\, and the elders warn that they cannot afford to stay indefinitely. \nEvan and his fifteen-year-old daughter\, Nangohns\, are elected to lead a small scouting party on a months-long trip to their traditional home on the north shore of Lake Huron—to seek new beginnings and discover what kind of life—and what dangers—still exist in the lands to the south. \nMoon of the Turning Leaves is Rice’s exhilarating return to the world first explored in the phenomenal breakout bestseller Moon of the Crusted Snow: a brooding story of survival\, resilience\, Indigenous identity\, and rebirth. Register now for a thrilling conversation! \nAbout the Author:  Waubgeshig Rice is an author and journalist originally from Wasauksing First Nation. His books include the Independent Publishers Book Award-winning short story collection Midnight Sweatlodge and the national bestselling novel Moon of the Crusted Snow. Reporting for CBC News for the bulk of his journalism career\, in 2014\, he received the Anishinabek Nation’s Debwewin Citation for excellence in First Nation Storytelling\, and from 2018 to 2020\, he hosted Up North\, CBC Radio’s afternoon show for northern Ontario.

SUMMARY:I Am Nobody’s Slave: An Author Talk with Pulitzer Prize Finalist Lee Hawkins
DESCRIPTION:I Am Nobody’s Slave: An Author Talk with Pulitzer Prize Finalist Lee Hawkins\nTuesday\, February 18 at 2:00 pm via digital live stream \nREGISTER HERE \nWe welcome you to our conversation with journalist and author Lee Hawkins as he talks to us about the examination of his family’s legacy of post-enslavement trauma and resilience in this riveting memoir\, I Am Nobody’s Slave: How Uncovering My Family’s History Set Me Free. \nI Am Nobody’s Slave tells the story of one Black family’s pursuit of the American Dream through the impacts of systemic racism and racial violence. This book examines how trauma from enslavement and Jim Crow shaped their outlook on thriving in America\, influenced each generation\, and how they succeeded despite these challenges. \nTo their suburban Minnesotan neighbors\, the Hawkinses were an ideal American family\, embodying strength and success. However\, behind closed doors\, they faced the legacy of enslavement and apartheid. Lee Hawkins\, Sr. often exhibited rage\, leaving his children anxious and curious about his protective view of the world. Thirty years later\, his son uncovered the reasons for his father’s anxiety and occasional violence. Through research\, he discovered violent deaths in his family for every generation since slavery\, mostly due to white-on-Black murders\, and how white enslavers impacted the family’s customs. \nHawkins explores the role of racism-triggered childhood trauma and chronic stress in shortening his ancestors’ lives\, using genetic testing\, reporting\, and historical data to craft a moving family portrait. This book shows how genealogical research can educate and heal Americans of all races\, revealing through their story the story of America—a journey of struggle\, resilience\, and the heavy cost of ultimate success. Register today to join the conversation! \nAbout the Author: LEE HAWKINS was a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist as a lead reporter on a series about the Tulsa Massacre of 1921 at the Wall Street Journal\, where he worked for nineteen years. He has received several fellowships\, including The Carter Center’s Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism\, the Alicia Patterson Foundation Journalism Fellowship\, the O’Brien Fellowship for Public Service Journalism\, the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism National Fellowship for reporting on child well-being. Hawkins is a five-time winner of the National Association of Black Journalists’ “Salute to Excellence” Award. He is the creator and host of the podcast “What Happened in Alabama?” and lives in the New York City area.

SUMMARY:How Women’s Liberation Transformed America: In Conversation with Clara Bingham
DESCRIPTION:How Women’s Liberation Transformed America: In Conversation with Clara Bingham\nThursday\, March 20 at 2:00 pm via digital live stream \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin us for a transformative conversation with award-winning journalist and author\, Clara Bingham\, as she chats with us about her new book\, The Movement: How Women’s Liberation Transformed America\, 1963-1973. \nThe Movement is a comprehensive and engaging oral history of the decade that defined the feminist movement\, including interviews with living icons and unsung heroes. The Movement is the first oral history of the decade that built the modern feminist movement. Through the captivating individual voices of the people who lived it\, The Movement tells the intimate inside story of what it felt like to be at the forefront of the modern feminist crusade when women rejected thousands of years of custom and demanded the freedom to be who they wanted and needed to be. \nThis engaging history traces women’s awakening\, organizing\, and agitating between 1963 and 1973 when a decentralized collection of people and events coalesced to create a spontaneous combustion. From Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique to the underground abortion network the Janes\, to Shirley Chisholm’s presidential campaign and Billie Jean King’s 1973 battle of the sexes\, Bingham artfully weaves together the fragments of that explosion person by person\, bringing to life the emotions of this personal\, cultural\, and political revolution. Artists and politicians\, athletes and lawyers\, Black and white\, The Movement brings readers into the rooms where these women insisted on being treated as first-class citizens and\, in the process\, changed the fabric of American life. \nAbout the Author: Clara Bingham is an award-winning journalist and the author of The Movement\, Witness to the Revolution\, Women on the Hill\, and the co-writer of Class Action. A former Washington\, DC\, correspondent for Newsweek\, her writing has appeared in Vanity Fair\, The Guardian\, and The Daily Beast\, among others. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.
