SUMMARY:September Artist: Kate Themel
DESCRIPTION:Kate Themel\nSeptember 1 – 30\, 2026 \nBurnham Library is pleased to present an exhibition of work by award-winning Connecticut fiber artist Kate Themel from September 1 through September 30\, 2026. The exhibition will showcase Themel’s distinctive quilted compositions\, which combine the traditions of textile art with the principles and techniques of fine art. \nThemel\, who lives in Cheshire\, Connecticut\, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 1992 and began working with fabric as an artistic medium in 1996. Drawing on her formal art training\, she has developed a painterly style using fabric\, thread\, color\, shape\, and texture to create expressive fiber compositions. \nHer work has been exhibited in galleries and museums from Boston to Botswana and has been selected for prestigious international exhibitions\, including Art Quilt Elements\, the Kagoshima Quilt Show in Japan\, and Quilt National. Her work has received both the People’s Choice Award and the Young Emerging Artist Award at Quilt National. \n“I rely on my formal training when I’m evaluating a composition and deciding if it works or not\,” Themel explains. “The elements of art are the same whether you use ink\, paint\, or fabric as the medium.” \nFor Themel\, fabric provides an expansive creative palette. She uses textiles to explore value\, color\, and shape\, while machine stitching introduces lines and texture. The layered and tactile nature of fiber art also allows her to explore its sculptural qualities. \nIn addition to her gallery and museum work\, Themel has created custom fiber art for individuals\, hospitals\, and corporate clients. \nThe exhibition will be on display at Burnham Library throughout September. Visitors are invited to stop in during regular library hours to experience Themel’s unique approach to contemporary fiber art.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: David O. Stewart
DESCRIPTION:The Democracy We Must Keep: Why the Ideas that Built America Still Matter with David O. Stewart\nREGISTER & SUBMIT QUESTIONS HERE \nvia Digital Livestream or on Demand \nJoin us as we chat with award-winning historian David O. Stewart about his newest work\, The Democracy We Must Keep\, and the question he explores throughout the book: What did America’s founders say about democracy\, and can we remain true to their vision for America? \nTwo hundred fifty years ago\, passionate men attempted to create something the world had never seen before: a nation built not on kings or armies\, but on ideas where the people ruled. \nIn The Democracy We Must Keep\, historian David O. Stewart takes readers inside the nine key documents that shaped the formation of the United States—from Patrick Henry’s thunderous cry for liberty to the carefully crafted design of a government chosen by the people\, with limits on all officials holding power under the Constitution. \nAbout the Author: \nDavid O. Stewart has published eleven award-winning and best-selling books of history and historical novels. In 2023\, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Washington Independent Review of Books. His most recent fictional series\, the Overstreet Saga\, is inspired by family stories his mother told. He lives in Maryland with the light of his life\, Nancy Floreen; they have three children and six grandchildren.
